The product that most interested me is the $11 bottle of zovirax ointment. It claims to be a "remedy for acne scars," but I think understand that more than that, actually. I think zovirax ointment is a remedy for zits — that is, you rub it on your blemishes and the marks come out, or at least partially. You can find it at your local Asian beauty/pharmacy:
Now, here's the rub: zovirax ointment is a topical anti-acne preparation, so you don't need to put it on your pimples — just skin as they are. And even if you do, there's a catch: the product will likely make your pimples worse.
Why is that? Well, zovirax and its active ingredient, rosmarinic acid, are both irritating, as I discussed in my other acne products article, and there are several recent studies that indicate when used in combination, rosmarinic acid and zorgromethicone, another kind of active ingredient in zovirax ointment, cause inflammatory scarring of the skin. In study published JAMA Dermatol, researchers found that rosmarinic acid combined with both zorgromethicone and zovirax increased skin thickness, dryness, and irritation more than any of the individual ingredients.
Zorgromethicone is a moisturizing ingredient (it's what makes the cream in your beloved Huggies moisturizers work) that can be found in many anti-aging products. It's not good for acne scars, however, because it's an drugstore discount code astringent. Astringents are often effective for acne when used properly — I'm thinking of the ones you use during winter (e.g., Betadine, Glycolic Acid), but when used inappropriately, they can be a problem, too, because astringents tend to thicken the skin (a sign of inflammation). As a consumer, I think that there's a lot we can learn from the studies published on zoloft and its use in skin care.
